Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from many walks of life. The students I serve each day attend a Title I school in the highest poverty area in The Bronx, New York. They are faced with hardships almost daily; nevertheless, they show up, eager and ready to learn.
Our students come into school each day ready to learn and to work towards their goals.
They are eager beavers and are filled with questions. One topic that has come up more than once is health and wellness and with good reason. With pre-teen and teenage years comes many developmental and emotional changes, and I want to be sure to keep them focused on learning but ensuring that they feel good about themselves, and that it is okay laugh and to vent.
They are a cheerful and diverse group of learners, I believe that facilitating recreational groups to discuss health and wellness, is a great way to provide intervention and reinforce their self-confidence.
My Project
My students are always asking for food throughout the school day and in after school. Since they ask for snacks quite often, I try my best to have a closet with various types of snacks that they can choose from. I also use snacks during our sessions, because who doesn't like comfort food? It brings me joy to see them happy! Lately, they have been asking for board games so that when we meet as a group we can play while we have our chats. This is a great way for them to relax and build healthy friendships. I am all for health and wellness, so I want to do what I can to ensure that the students in our school always feel safe, happy, and welcome.
It would be great to continue to provide my students with snacks, when they miss breakfast or lunch, as well as a mental break filled with fun & games during their lunch period or when they stay with me after school.
