My students need 13 sets of leveled books for teacher-guided reading groups and 1 set of white boards to record their answers to reading comprehension questions.

We need books! This is the first year that my co-teacher and I are teaching exclusively in the 5th grade. We have great plans for differentiating the reading instruction in our classroom but are in desperate need of books at the reading level of all of our students in our classroom.
We are inheriting a phenomenal group of students from our school's 4th grade.
Their teachers have told us that they have an intrinsic love of learning. We have seen them in action and are excited to teach them. They participate in discussions and are motivated to do well. Our rising 5th graders have gained an average of 2 grade levels of growth in reading this year. Ms. G and I want to continue this trend. In our urban school district where many students have limited access to educational opportunities, we would like to ensure that as many of our students as possible are reading at or above grade level by the end of the school year. This will set them up for the type of educational opportunities in the future that they all so richly deserve.
The 13 sets of leveled reading books that we are requesting are exactly what a classroom like ours needs! We are asking you to help us purchase books from such beloved authors as E.L Konigsburg (The View From Saturday), Jerry Spinelli (Maniac Magee, Loser), and Betsy Byars (Summer of the Swans). The books range from level Q for our lowest readers to level Z for our advanced readers. Being able to read books at their "just right" levels will help our students to broaden their comprehension skills. By working in homogeneous groups, they will be able to discuss what they have read and to think deeply with peers about each text. We hope that by the end of the year, they have all advanced past the lower books to the higher ones in our new library. I am also requesting 1 set of white boards to record their answers to reading comprehension questions.
You can make a difference.
Help our classroom get off to a successful start by contributing to our project. These books will help our students to stay on the track that they began last year. With the right books for guided reading, they will be able to continue to advance in their reading proficiency. As we all know, being able to read well opens up a world of opportunities in life. This is exactly what our students both need and deserve.
