My students reflect the cultural richness of New York City and they speak approximately thirty-four, different languages among them!
Our school is an academically rigorous, tuition-free high school and college associate's degree program.
Many of my students are the first in their families to attend college. They are very eager for the opportunity to earn two years of free college tuition at the time of their high school graduation.
It is incredibly rewarding to work with such curious, eager, and motivated students as their virtual Library Director, Creative Writing Teacher, and Speaker Series Coordinator.
My Project
When you close a book with a satisfied sigh, do you ever wish you could chat with the author and ask her how they came up with their ideas? In my Guest Writers series and class, you can meet authors after reading their books, and go “behind the book”–or behind the scenes—in the author’s writing process. You will read and discuss books by diverse writers, then meet the authors to ask questions, continue a discussion of their work, and hear them read aloud.
We're so excited to welcome Julia Phillips, National Book Award Finalist and author of Disappearing Earth to our school!
Students have been reading her book, and when I was lucky enough to meet her in person, I arranged for her to come as a visiting writer. This kind of exciting, dynamic activity is even more meaningful during Covid.
Disappearing Earth was an international bestseller nominated for numerous awards. Drawing on her experiences as a Fulbright fellow in the Kamchatka Peninsula in northeastern Russia, Phillips' novel focuses on a community of women and girls whose lives are linked and shaped by the kidnapping of two sisters. Phillips will discuss her research and writing process, language learning, living on a remote peninsula filled with tundras and volcanoes and opening her heart and imagination to a new culture. Students are just as eager to learn about Russia as they are in novel-writing.
My students have loved reading Julia's book and now they're thrilled at the idea of getting to meet her over Zoom. They already have a list of questions to ask, and they are eager for the opportunity. Thanks for supporting the future of literary fiction and public school students.
