Each day, my students face challenges, before they enter the school building, ranging from extreme poverty, single-parent households, where the parent works multiple jobs, students with incarcerated parents, and many students who live in shelters.
Despite these challenges, my students come to school each day, and I do my best to provide an emotionally supportive environment to foster academic success.
I am very concerned for with a large number of my students who are engaging in aggressive behaviors when they are angry and resorting to physical means to handle their anger.
My Project
I am a middle school Social Worker in the South Bronx seeking funding for games and workbooks to use with my students who struggle managing their anger.
I am struggling to teach my students anger management with all their exposure to violence via the media, song lyrics, and in their immediate community.
At my school, I try to intervene when altercations arise before they become violent through verbal mediations between the students having conflicts. For many students, this is an effective intervention. For some, it is not.
For the students who frequently resort to violence to resolve their angry emotions, I work with them in small groups and individually. Having a variety of games and activities to make our sessions fun as well as productive would be beneficial to their progress in managing their anger.
