Help me give my students opportunities to strengthen sensory and social-emotional self-regulation skills with a freestanding punching bag, exercise mats, training gloves, floor rockers, and more.
On an average day we work up 20 to 30 students, ranging from 12 to 15 years of age. Why I love this population of students is small victories. There is no cookie cutter kid. Some students need help to understand themselves, the world around them, and their place in the world. That is why the small victories, such as taking part in class, completing a project, or just coming to school, can be that small victories that makes teacher worth it.
We serve the most diverse district in the city's economically disadvantaged community, with 80% of our student population qualifying for free and reduced lunch.
Our school provides free breakfast and lunch to all students. Students often access assistive technology tools to communicate, learn and demonstrate their knowledge.
My Project
The sensory room will provide a safe and engaging place for students to practice self regulation skills that are taught in our center-based program to support students' emotional needs. The sensory room will be organized into the color-coded zones of regulation that reflect the state of individual students' emotional levels of frustration and align with our social emotional curriculum.
Movement, sensory stimulation, creative and experiential activities calm frustrations and help students refocus on learning.
We strive to build a real space for our students to go to calm anxieties, anger, sadness, hurt as well as to open up and be themselves. This safe place for students will use a variety of sensory strategies to regulate their emotions and refocus their behaviors. The zones of regulation throughout the room will allow students to learn, adapt, and develop social and coping skills to express their needs and frustrations appropriately.
