Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a challenging area. 100% of students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch. Some of them live in daily, weekly, and monthly hotels and are basically considered homeless.
School is a safe haven for our students and we work hard to ensure that it is a welcoming place where they have stability and guidance.
They deserve a quality education no matter what!
Everyone at our school from the teachers and assistants to the office personnel and administration all work hard to get to learn about each student and help them with what it is that they need in order to be successful.
My Project
I want to improve the mental health of my students. Many of them experience anger, nervousness, and depression when they struggle with learning new concepts or meeting learning goals. They do not have a growth mindset, but rather a fixed mindset.
Cultivating a growth mindset could be the single most important thing you ever do to help you achieve success.
People with a fixed mindset are very discouraged by setbacks, because a setback dents their belief in their ability. They tend to become uninterested and give up. People with a growth mindset view a setback as an opportunity to learn. They tend to try harder in an effort to overcome the problem. STEM activities help students learn to embrace challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, see effort as a path to mastery, learn from criticism, and find lessons and inspiration in the success of others. Through STEM they will develop a growth mindset and achieve greater success not just in school, but in life!
I am requesting professional books to help me teach STEM lessons foster a growth mindset for my students. These books also have lessons to use throughout the year so that students will learn to develop a healthy mindset. I am also asking for inspirational posters and a bulletin board set as visuals in the classroom for kid friendly reminders of what STEM activities should look like. Last I am asking for ready made activities and supplies so that we may get started right away doing engaging STEM activities. I will be able to use most of these materials for years to come!
