My Students

I teach English as a second language for a public school system. The school I work provides 100% free lunch. The students I work with are mainly from El Salvador. Some of them are separated from their families, and the rest who live with their families have very limited resources, but they love to learn and they are very appreciative of anything we give them at school (it could be something as simple as a sticker).

Their families are hard labor workers, and they work very long hours.

But they do want the best for their kids and are also very appreciative of what we (teachers) do with their kids at school.

The students are in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. We learn content subjects such as ELA, science, and social studies.

I am also an immigrant to this country as well. English is also my second language and that's how I connect to my students.

My Project

Growth mindset is the theme of our classroom this year. Students will meet me at the round table weekly to discuss their growth and improvement plan.

Students will sit on colorful chairs to discuss their learning plans.

I want the round table to be the focus of the classroom. The colorful chairs will enhance the growth mindset theme. The chairs will attract students to the task. Students will learn that a mindset is everything, which is a skill students need to problem solve in life.

The growth mindset round table will also be used for social emotional learning where students will be able to take a mental break during instructional time. Such breaks will help minimize disruptive behavior.
