My students need flexible seating options promote focus and student choice (bean bag chairs, wobble cushions, stools, lap desks), writing materials (ink cartridges, pencils, notebooks, folders, paper, scissors, pens) and listening center headphones.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a classroom of animated, excited, and smart third graders! The challenge we are confronted with is having some of the basic school supplies needed for a typical day as well as tools for a literacy rich environment.
Our school district is in the thick of a budget crisis with no resolution in sight.
All 30 of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Still, these eight and nine year olds come to school every day with beaming smiles and open minds ready to learn something new.
My Project
Just as we dress aspiring football players in helmets and jerseys to help them assume their new roles, it is also important to equip kids with writerly tools. My students need flexible seating and various writing materials to continue to grow into their identity of becoming a writer.

The portable lap desks, bean bags, wobble cushions and inflatable chairs will provide my students an exciting way to choose where they sit while they write using the notebooks, folders, pencils and paper.
Kids need extensive opportunities to write on topics they care about, explicit and scaffolded instruction, and critical feedback to propel them into next steps. It's a tall order for teachers to provide those conditions to kids if they don't have the basic tools and materials.
