Our kids come from hard working, middle class families. Their families provide them with the very best they have, but at times it's not enough.
They come to school eager to learn, knowing education is a step forward in their future.
Each student has a desire to learn and be successful. They are creative, humorous, full of energy, and ready to take on the world. In our building we believe that to build a future for them, we ALL need to be a part of their lives. We are a community, but we're also a family.
My Project
At our school we are making an outdoor learning center. We will have a weather station and several bird feeders so we can watch bird behavior. We are also wanting to have an area for students to raise and study plants.
Utilizing a raised bed will allow for all students, K-5 grade to participate in the growing of vegetables and flowers.
We want our students to experience first hand all the steps needed for caring for plants. We will use the raised bed to plant the flowers and vegetables. The watering cans will be used to water the plants. We chose seeds that are best for the seasons they are actually in school. Our summer school classes will be able to use the materials this summer.
My hope is the students will learn the value of hard work and how to care for and tend a garden. Many students are use to eating fast food and do not realize the ease and convenience of growing your own food.
The best part will be the food it provides for us at the end of summer school and into our next school year! This project ties into our goal of having an outdoor learning center that students can participate in authentic learning and ties to our curriculum.
