This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When I think about my role as a teacher, it's simple. Open the door for students to love reading. Share habits of life long readers. Beyond standards and assessments, reading is a shared humanities experience. Some students love reading. Some students just haven't found the right book yet.
As a middle school teacher, I'm often told over and over again in September by students "I just don't like reading,"; these are actually my favorite words to hear.
Ahead of this student lies a journey of wonder... IF I can help them find the right book.
My students are hard workers; they want to be successful and make their families proud. So much of what lies ahead in their academic futures relies on being a strong reader. For many of them, as they enter sixth grade, this is not the case. They arrive shy, excited, and committed to the idea that they don't enjoy reading very much. With the right texts and some thoughtful planning, these very students will soon be begging for more time to read and traveling to new lands, all made possible through having a world of books at their fingertips.
My Project
My students have been asking me for new graphic novels! I'm determined to see them keep reading and want to provide them with meaningful rich choices that tell stories through graphic form.
Graphic novels go fast in my classroom; most of my students read more than two years behind, so if they make a request, I want to get the books that interest them in their hands as soon as possible.
Reading is a journey. I never want my students to feel like they need to read certain types of books to be considered "good readers." Graphic novels provide a level of engagement that allow my students to access creative stories with universal themes. Reading is about relating and finding new experiences in stories. Graphic novels help my students do this and inspire them to continue growing as readers.
