My reading support students all fall below grade level in the subject of reading. These students vary in age from Kindergarten - Grade 5. They are serviced in my room weekly in a small group setting of between 4 - 12 students seen at a time for 30 - 40 minute sessions.
My students need to hear, see, touch and use text in order to make it theirs.
Each of them benefits from manipulatives and resources that present text in a new way. This project is to help with extending text to real life. It will be shared with our entire school.
I will be teaming up with our technology teacher to make a 4th grade group who will manage the project with us throughout the year.
My Project
With this project, our 4th grade group and entire school will get an opportunity to have a hands-on experience growing the different foods that we so often tell them are good for them. Because we will be using our computer lab as a base, all students in the school will be able to watch it grow and also monitor it during classes in the lab. This hands-on stem activity is a great way for students to be introduced to and understand the life cycle of plants and animals. They will also gain, with the help of the fish tank and the AquaSprout garden, an understanding of the relationship different species can have with each other.
In addition, it is a fun and tasty way for our students to see how plants affect our own bodies.
They also will gain an understanding of what is like to be responsible for the care of animals. We will use the AquaSprout garden to grow many different types of herbs and bed vegetables such as lettuce, basil and more. Our students need to have an understanding of where their food comes from, and how agriculture contributes to our economy and society.
