Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to read and are working on gaining a deeper appreciation for poetry. Most students were not excited when they learned that we would be focusing on poetry and art to develop their English language skills this year, but they are quickly changing their minds. They are learning to work collaboratively to discover how others persevered through struggles and are expressing their experiences through original poems.
Being able to express their emotions and experiences through poetry and art has opened up sides of my students that I've never seen.
Students who have not produced a lot of writing for me in previous years are sharing their stories through poetry and giving me a deeper insight and understanding of who they are.
My Project
This year, students are learning language through poetry and art. We are translating world-class poems from their original languages into English. Our lessons this year focus on immigration and migration and how our experiences influence our identity. Students have already translated Angel Island Poem #42 and created their own poems. Completing each poetry translation cycle requires a lot of paper so the copy paper will allow us to translate many more poems this year. With the art supplies, students will be able to create art to go with their poems which will be displayed around the school.
Students love to write poetry and illustrate their creations.
Students had a great time creating rubbings after translating the Angel Island poem to reflect how the Chinese immigrants shared their poems. They wrote their original poems on top of the rubbings and proudly displayed their creations in the hallway. For their final project, students will be compiling their original poems, along with a graphic story that they'll create about themselves into a personalized journal that they'll be able to take home and treasure.
