Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a sixth grade math and science classroom in a public school in Chicago. Our school is Title I eligible, with over 90% of our students categorized as low income. My students come from diverse backgrounds with diverse skills and experiences. Most of our students speak a language other than English at home and 44% of our students have limited English proficiency.
My students are motivated and eager to improve in all aspects.
My school's math and science curriculum that I teach provides hands-on, problem-based experiences so students can discover information instead of being told and expected to memorize. Students learn more, remember more, and have so much fun when they can put their hands on something, manipulate it, and explore patterns that they notice to find new learning.
I also coach the co-ed cheerleading squad at Hibbard Elementary School. We focus on promoting school spirit and cheering for our sports teams and we finish the year off with a competition in the spring. Our athletes often do not have the funds to receive training outside of school so I do my best to teach them fundamentals of safe tumbling/gymnastics with the materials that we have available!
My Project
This incline mat and balance boards will be used in many ways, but mostly for our cheerleading squad to build tumbling and stunting skills in a safe way.
Our students are unable to afford gymnastics training outside of school so those skills are taught safely by our cheerleading coach.
The balance board will be used by the cheerleaders to work on balance and build core strength.
By giving these resources to our cheerleading squad, we will also have access to them for our PE programs to use as needed! The incline mat and balance boards will also provide a safe avenue for growing skills and building strength for our students.
