Do you remember the excitement of going to the library as a child? What about the book fair? Children are much more excited about what they are reading when they are able to choose their books. In our classroom there are not enough books to provide choice and challenge for readers.
My students come from across the city of Washington, DC making up an economically and racially diverse learning community.
Our common love of reading is a powerful and positive glue that brings our class together. Our school is a newer school that is growing each year. Built on the principles of Intellect, Inquiry, Imagination and Integrity, our school is one where community thrives.
My Project
As an elementary school teacher, my goal each year is to help my students to love books and love reading. Armed with that love, students will go on to succeed in school for years to come. To build each child's love of reading, I create a classroom environment that constantly celebrates reading. Our classroom library is a welcoming, prominent space in the classroom. We need more books to sustain students' reading. With these classroom book sets, students can choose from a variety of challenging, high-quality books. Students will celebrate their reading by... choosing new books each week; challenging themselves with a variety of books on their reading level; sharing their favorite books by giving book talks; learning expression and voice through read alouds; comparing books and characters as they read; and taking pride in their reading and caring for our library
For all of these activities we need more books for students at every reading level.
Children need to consistently be reading books of their choice on their reading level in order to grow as readers.
With the addition of these classroom library sets, every child will have a greater opportunity to find the book or character that hooks them, challenges them and inspires them to continue to read in second grade and beyond.
