Growing Respect Through Art

Help me give my students supplies to create an outdoor garden/reading space for a class community service project.

My Students

My students come from one of the poorest regions in the United States. In my elementary school, 98% of the students live at or below poverty level. The Arkansas Delta does not provide much in the way of entertainment or industry, but it is rich in diversity and history.

Building a culture of respect that will help bridge communication between our students, families, and communities is one of my main goals this year.

I have several projects planned that I feel will help that goal become a reality, but we need supplies that our budget cannot provide.

My Project

My students have chosen "respect" as the theme of their class civic engagement project. We plan to learn about the history of our school, build a community garden to highlight the monument which marks the site of George Washington Carver School (the school for African Americans before integration). My students will build a culture of respect by showing respect for themselves, as well as their classmates, families, and communities.

After reading the book, Only One You, my students decided that they would like to paint rocks to show their individual personalities.

The rocks will be placed in a small garden and outdoor classroom/reading area that students and community members could enjoy. Each student will be represented because each of them is an important part of our learning community.
