Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are English Language Learners newly arrived to the country. They are strong, capable, and creative kids who have come here hoping for a better life and education. They work incredibly hard to learn all of the core subjects plus a new language and culture.
Some of my students are also SLIFE students - students with limited or informal education, which means that they work even harder to catch up to everyone else.
They deserve amazing books to read.
My Project
My students need a classroom library with authentic books that are appropriate for them. These books are perfect for my level 1 and level 2 English Language Learners! We will use the books during book clubs, independent reading time, and homework. Right at the beginning of the year, we will read "I Am Enough" by Grace Byers as it fits our theme of "Self Identity". We will also read "Island Born" by Junot Diaz to explore the theme "Where I Am From" in our second unit.
These books will not only serve to validate some of my students' experiences but it will show them that being an immigrant and a person of color is something to be proud of.
The books will also help my students learn about different cultures and celebrations, such as "The Diwali Gift" by Shweta Chopra, and will enable them to see themselves in printed text. It is important that our students relate to the characters in the books they read so they will develop a love of reading!
