After 20 plus years of teaching I've found the sweet spot; third grade. Third grade students are both filled with that innocent state of wonder while at the same time ready to think deeply about their world. My school sits in the middle of small town America, there is a sense of community that reaches out to all who live here. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, we come together each day ready to learn and grow together.
I have been given the opportunity to change the world.
Everyday I get the chance to make a child a more happy, more confident and more empathic person. These are the small hands that will someday hold the world, and my hope is that they will be caring hands. If I can give my third grade students an outstanding year, they will be more likely to go on and do outstanding things.
My Project
Third grade can be a make it or break it year for young readers. I want to create a well stocked, versatile and welcoming library for my young readers. I want it to be a sought after space in the classroom where students linger and explore. I have chosen books that range in readability and interest. I have chosen books for the scientist, the history buff, the dreamer and all those in between.
Students who believe themselves to be strong readers will rise to face new challenges with confidence.
If a child enjoys reading, regardless of where she is in her ability, she will continue to read. That is the key, getting kids to read and keeping them reading. A well stocked library will allow me to help create those life long readers.
