My classroom is a friendly environment where a lot of learning takes place on a daily basis. We are striving to become great readers and developing our understanding of texts on a daily basis.
I have 28 wonderful first graders this year.
These kids have the biggest hearts and want to learn. They work so hard every single day and never stop wanting to learn. They set goals for themselves and then when they reach them we celebrate the success. We have spent a lot of time on our reading and it is now starting to show with the growth of these kids and all the hard work they're putting in at home and at school. I teach in a large school district, where we have 5 elementary schools. The school I work in has 4 first grade classrooms. We have free breakfast every single day in our classrooms for our students.
My Project
My students would use the listening center as a rotation during our Daily 5 in the afternoon. The kids are in need of the listening center from Lakeshore so they are able to listen to the stories on the cd's while following along in the books at this station during the Daily 5. After listening to the stories, they will then will respond using one of our graphic organizers based on comprehension skills we've been working on. The listening center will allow them to listen to books that interest and engage them while also working on comprehension. My low kids would be able to listen to the books without the frustration of trying to sound and figure out words. My above grade level kids would be able to listen to higher level books and work on responding to those. My on level kids would be able to focus on the comprehension piece. This would benefit all of my kids in many ways from being exposed to print and working on comprehension strategies with high interest stories.
This would improve our classroom by giving the students another chance to listen to fluent readers on the cd player.
This will give the students another center in our daily 5. This will change my student's for the better because they will be able to pick books of interest to them from our collection and allow them more of a choice on what they listen to or read. By allowing them the choice, they're taking on there own learning which is what it is all about these days!
