Welcome to The Reading Room! This classroom uses reading intervention that balances both comprehension and decoding instruction in order to provide all children with the experiences they need to learn to read. Students enjoy setting goals and tracking their progress. Instruction is tailored to individual needs to ensure accelerated growth.
My students are kindergarten through 5th graders who are struggling to learn to read.
They are curious and eager to learn and grow. Although they face many challenges, my students enjoy their time in the Reading Room, because they work in small groups focused on their needs.
My Project
When working with struggling readers, merging reading and technology is the perfect recipe for engaging students in the reading process. I am requesting the Apple iPads for my students to use specifically for a proven reading intervention called HillRAP. This research based program, which has enjoyed extraordinary success, was developed in 1977 by the Hill Center located in Durham NC. It is individualized multisensory instruction based on the Orton Gillingham approach and I am fortunate to have been trained and certified as a HillRAP instructor.
Currently, my students only have access to this program through printed resources.
While the program is useful as a printed binder for each student, the success is greatly enhanced when technology is involved. iPads enable more efficient delivery of these research based methodologies. The technology will provide minute to minute updates of changes in student achievements, enabling a perfect match to student needs. In addition, having the iPads will allow students access to many other digital reading resources to support their practice and growth.
