My students need a variety of 14 engaging, high-interest novels to choose from so that they can become more excited about and confident in their reading!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book and really felt connected to a character in the book? In my 9th grade reading class, the biggest challenge I face is finding texts that are engaging, relevant, and challenging for my students.
I teach 9th grade reading in an urban high school where the majority of my students receive free or reduced lunches.
My students are intelligent, energized, and creative! They all want to succeed and want to become better readers, but they have been discouraged by texts that they can't connect to and quickly disengage from. This coming school year, I would like to build my classroom's library so that my students have more options for books that will interest and excite them!
My Project
In my class, my goal is to help foster a love for reading and to help struggling readers feel more confident in their ability to read. Through literature circles, book clubs, reader response journals, reading workshop, and independent reading, I have seen students grow their reading level significantly. However, the key is to find texts that are engaging, relevant to my students' lives, and challenging.
I have researched and chosen a list of books that I would love to have in my classroom library this coming year. I have read each book and am confident that they would drastically help to engage struggling readers and teach reading strategies. I am requesting four copies of each book because I have found that literature circles can transform a classroom into a community that analyzes and talks about literature.
All of the students in my class deserve the chance to experience the transformational power of literature and to become stronger and more confident readers.
Your donation to this project could lead a student who has always felt discouraged by reading to discover a love for literature, making an incredible and lasting impact on his or her future!
