My Students
"I don't really like reading but that book that you gave me I couldn't stop reading it." This sentiment from students demonstrates the power of reading. The power that books have to transcend barriers is amazing. My students have enthusiastically embraced the challenge of overcoming their fixed mindsets toward reading and transition to growth mindsets.
The other part of the magic happens when my students see themselves and their realities in books which in turn motivates them to seek out more books to read because they've learned that books also have healing power.
My Project
The funding of this project will allow my students to participate in a national literacy movement. The provision of these diverse, culturally relevant books will provide opportunities for students to converse about a range of diverse topics embedded in quality books.
Being able to read diverse culturally relevant text will motivate my students to engage in reading for pleasure which will enhance the reading skills they already possess.
These books also allow them to expand them thinking about history, i.e. culture, health. In addition, these books will allow my students to interact with other members of the book club to share ideas and grow as readers together.
