My students need a wide variety of relevant and exciting fiction. They are eager to continue many beloved series, begin new ones, and share read aloud experiences!
Where do I start when introducing you to my third graders? This sweet group is ready! They are eager learners, they are careful problem-solvers and they are willing to dig deep. Each and every child in this class is very caring. They have bonded and created a classroom culture that is a family. Encouraging comments naturally escape their mouths throughout every part of our day.
These students come from a variety of backgrounds, but come together each day to explore, discover, ask, imagine, create, and, most of all...think!
My third graders come from a diverse array of settings. Some are fortunate enough to live right on our beautiful lake surrounded by views. Others live in a motel downtown and are technically classified as "homeless." Once they enter the doors of our school, those differences disappear. Poverty disappears when they cross the threshold. There are no unsafe situations. There are no negative thoughts or experiences. Once those precious gems walk through our doors, they are on an even playing field. Every student is expected to achieve, collaborate, inquire, discover, and create.
My Project
I have a class who is very passionate about reading! They get so excited when we get new books in our library! With that level of passion and excitement paired with an hour of reader's workshop every day, it's hard to keep up with the demands of such voracious readers! I am forever dropping a book or two into my personal Amazon shopping cart, sharing books of my own children's with my classroom readers, and checking out a multitude of books from our public library. In spite of all this, my little readers are devouring books faster than I can keep up.
It is important to have a wide variety of relevant and exciting text for young, growing readers.
My readers are highly motivated when reading books by favorite authors, books in series that they love, and books recommended to them by their friends. With that in mind, it can be difficult to keep up with these dynamic readers! Students are finishing books and needing the next ones in the series before I am even aware that the newest in the series is published sometimes!
As I confer with my students individually each day, I get to grow alongside them as two readers naturally do. We share laughs, we recommend books to one another, we puzzle over complexities, and we predict what our favorite characters will do next. We commiserate when characters suffer through ordeals and get disappointed when our workshop time must come to a close. These types of growing opportunities do not just "happen". I have to be diligent and purposeful in the opportunities I'm providing for my students. With that sense of purpose comes a growing need for materials. What better materials to put in the hands of our thinkers than good literature?
