My students are just discovering a love of books. While they all love discovering new books, many are only able to do so in our classroom library. Many of my students do not have books at home. Your donation will allow my classroom to improve their literacy skills and foster a love for reading.
I am embarking on teaching First Grade for the first time this year.
I was lucky enough to teach Kindergarten to some of my students last year and I discovered they love reading books. By the end of Kindergarten, students have read or browsed every book that I have in the classroom many, many times! We need some exciting, quality, new books for our classroom book boxes in a variety of genres for First Grade!
I have 22 students in my Grade 1 class. We are a school-wide Title I school located in an urban neighborhood. Our community is challenged economically and for many of my students, the hours spent at school are the best hours of their day.
My students are culturally diverse, from countries all over the world. Many of my students struggle academically and require extra support in fundamentals. With that being said, they are the most terrific, caring, classroom community a teacher could ask for. They inspire me every day!
My Project
Most of my classroom community was together last year in Kindergarten and they have already read all the books in our classroom library. In my First Grade classroom, students will self-select books for their individual book boxes from book bins that I have available to them. These book bins are categorized so that children can quickly find a book that they are looking for. I try to supply as many choices of books as possible. Some of the categories that they choose books from are: Animals, Farm Life, Eric Carle, Alphabet, Non-Fiction, Forest, Dinosaurs, etc. The challenge is to keep enough books available to my students so that they can exchange their book box books often and experience new, rich, exciting, quality books as often as possible. Many of my students do not have choice books at home. I have requested a collection of books that I would be proud to share with my students. They are wonderful selections in fiction and non-fiction that my students will enjoy.
I was a last minute hire to my school last year due to an increase of enrollment of students.
My classroom is assembled of second hand books, materials, and supplies. The boys and girls in my classroom and in our school community deserve the best resources available. Donations to this project will put great books into the hands of great kids. These books will be loved, shared and cherished every day! Thank you for considering our project.
