Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Research shows that (classroom) plants improve physical health, mental health, attendance, academic growth, and career development. And playing in the dirt is just fun.

My students and their families are underprivileged in numerous aspects.

I teach in an environment with several industrial plants that deteriorate the air quality. The greenery will provide better air quality for our classroom. Plants, along with playing in the dirt, can greatly reduce stress and promote better social-emotional health. Plants will allow my students to connect with nature, likely opening their minds to many educational and/or career options. Most of my students live in rental properties, specifically public housing, where access to greenery is limited.

Lastly, my classroom has no windows, so the netting and plastic covers will allow us to transport the plants outside during the day to get sunlight, without the worry of us bringing critters back inside the classroom. And of course, the books will promote literacy and offer connections to STEM learning.
