My students need to experience what it is really like to be a teacher. They will be treated as professionals and learn to teach. They can decide if this is the profession for them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of the students that I work with receive free or reduced price lunch. Many are students of color and almost all of them are planning to go on to college, many to join the teaching profession. Many will be in the first generation in their family to attend college and need additional support in gaining experiences to help them decide on a major and to build on their knowledge about the college bound process. By the time they reach their senior year, very few will have had on-the-job, job shadowing experiences or visited college campuses to learn specifically about studying education. Students need early exposure to career paths that interest them and the college experience to serve as motivation to pursue ambitious postsecondary goals.
My Project
We need to encourage our best students to go to college and join the teaching profession. Many students have no idea of a future career that they would enjoy. East Hartford High School students will have the opportunity to "try on" the teaching profession and find out if they just like playing with children or are they really ready to be teachers.
Our program will encourage members of our diverse community, many of whom will be the first generation in their family to attend college, to apply and enroll in higher education.
By visiting colleges, they will find out how to begin the process, what they need to know and what they can expect as they move beyond high school and work toward a career in education or any other field of their choice.
