Our school is made up of about 800 students. We have a mix of races and socioeconomic backgrounds. We also have a large military population, so many of our military students come and go throughout the year. Our school, teachers, and students work hard each day. The school has received many awards and is a Blue Ribbon School.
I teach about 65 fifth graders each day.
The way the curriculum is set up, students don't really receive a heavy science instruction until 4th grade. I work hard to make sure that the students get as many hands-on experiences as possible. I want to help prepare them for the middle and high school curriculum ahead. I also try to make math fun and interesting for the students.
My Project
A warm, welcoming and safe learning environment is what every child needs, especially children already facing difficulty in their lives with disabilities, lack of parental support, or even being homeless. I am seeking a few items to ensure that our classroom is their safe place and welcoming place for students that need a safe haven from their life outside of school. My students would benefit from having additional food in our classroom and snack packs to take home on the weekends. Many students already face so many challenges including disabilities, poverty, homelessness and living in broken homes that school needs to be their safety net.
I am hoping to have a classroom where they know they can ask for a midday snack or a snack pack for the weekend when some do not have access to free breakfast or lunch.
It is very hard for the students to focus if they have a grumbling tummy. I have found that having food on hand means they can satisfy their hunger and move on to being successful students in my math class. Having these having pretzel packs and cracker packs will help so much in our classroom.
