My Students

Welcome to the social-emotional project of the Rainbow Room teachers. Our special education "Rainbow Room" team serves students with a range of needs, including intellectual disabilities, emotional and behavioral disturbances, autism spectrum disorder, other health impairments, and specific learning disabilities. Almost half of these students are English language learners enrolled in our Dual Language Immersion program and 75% come from low-income households.

Many of our students have personal IEP (Individualized Education Program) goals dedicated to developing social-emotional skills, processing emotions, and practicing self-regulation strategies.

In addition, many of our students come to school coping with significant trauma experiences.

Before these students can learn, we need to first serve their basic social-emotional needs. Unfortunately, we have limited resources and social emotional learning curriculum to use with our students. Our team often makes a lot of homemade materials, which takes time and they are not always reusable. Our team shares one room to carry out this specially designed instruction. We hope to make the most of this space by enhancing it with social-emotional materials. With this project, we hope to attain a variety of social-emotional games that will enhance our students development of these vital life skills.

My Project

These materials will be used to address the often overlooked area of social-emotional development. In addition to histories of trauma, many students supported by my special education team are diagnosed with anxiety, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and emotional and behavioral disorders.

Learning in the core subject areas is only made more difficult for these students when they are not given explicit instruction in how to manage the various feelings and emotions that arise within them.

I hope to use the books, "in a jar" activities, and MindUP social emotional curriculum to start the school year arming my students with proactive tools and mindfulness strategies to help them manage the various emotions, stressors and anxieties that present themselves throughout the day.

Many of my students have social-emotional goals within their Individualized Education Programs (IEP's). Having a variety of curriculum and books focused on the individualized goals of each of my students will allow me to deliver social-emotional instruction tailored to each students' IEP needs, such as coping with anxiety, using executive functioning skills, anger management, and practicing mindfulness. I would like to use the Mindfulness Matters, Snoots Toots, and Totem games to continue practicing these strategies in a fun way with groups of students. They will also help with developing the important skills of empathy, listening to others, and good sportsmanship. Lastly, I plan on using the meditation pillows to create a space to deliver instruction in mindfulness and give students an area to take proactive breaks.

These materials will not only help my students now, but for many years to come. Thank you for your support in helping my students to develop crucial life-long skills that will allow them to self-regulate, develop relationships, participate and attend more to classroom instruction, and form a deeper understanding of their mind and body.
