Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in an amazing school that has embraced the value of developing bilingual and biliterate students. In our school, 96% of the students are students of color, 80% come from low income families and 21% are English Learners. I am proud to be a teacher in a First grade Spanish dual immersion classroom composed of 27 energetic and amazing students.

My students are enthusiastic, creative, thoughtful and eager learners!

They come to school ready to take risks, learn and try new things. It is amazing to see how willing they embrace learning in two languages. My students and I work together to build a strong classroom community in which different cultural backgrounds are respected and valued.

My Project

Hands-on materials are very important in teaching students about math. The math manipulatives that I selected will be useful tools for solving problems and help students make abstract ideas concrete. They will also help build my students’ confidence. If students have physical evidence of how their thinking works, their understanding is more robust.

These ten base blocks will help my students develop math concepts like addition and subtraction in relation to place value concepts in a fun and engaging way.

My students and I would appreciate your help in obtaining these materials for our classroom.
