Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember just reading about life science in a book? Help my students experience life science with these hands-on habitats...the joy and true learning experiences with hands-on activities just can't be replaced by a book.
My students are a heterogeneous group comprised of gifted and talented, average, and special needs students.
We live in a small rural community in Texas, where budget shortfalls are straining the districts budget.
I use these hands-on activities to spark enthusiasm for learning, help students see and understand life cycles (a major state standard in first grade), and provide students with a sense of responsibility to the environment.
My Project
Students with special needs (be that special education or gifted and talented) tend to have reservations when it comes to connecting with their environment and living creatures. My plan is to have these habitats that I've requested become a part of our classroom routine; allowing students to give care, watch growth, and research the life cycle of the animals. We will journal our ongoing observations as part of our science center, while questioning what we see daily.
The pure joy and excitement that you hear and see in a child's face when working with life science is amazing.
