My students are typical middle schoolers. They have short attention spans, like to move around, be goofy, and have fun. They come from a variety of economic backgrounds and home lives.
My students like to create, be imaginative, and come up with new ideas.
As a teacher I am constantly challenged to come up with new ways to motivate and challenge my students while making them comfortable to share new ideas and think outside of the box in a safe place..
My Project
Innovation, problem solving, and pressing on are all important skills for middle school students. Strategy games like Dungeons and Dragons helps develop these skills in students. I want to develop a club where students can learn to be imaginative and develop their creativity and problem solving skills in a fun, safe place. I am asking for the Dungeons and Dragons Player Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide which are three books that include rules and will help guide students and me as we play. I am also asking for game boards and dice which will help make the experience more immersive and allow for more players.
Remember how awkward middle school was?
It can be hard to make friends and it can be easy to compare yourself to others and worry about not being cool. Students need to have a feeling of belonging in order to excel in school. Having a place you belong can make you feel safe to develop your creativity, come up with new ideas, and solve difficult problems. Dungeons and Dragons Club can be that kind of place for middle schoolers.
