Welcome to Mrs. G.'s First Grade Classroom! My students are a special group of students, eager to learn and grow in First Grade. They come to first grade with a strong love of learning. My hope for them this year is that the grow in their love of learning to become more independent in their learning to ascertain their own strengths and abilities.
Together we will soar to new heights in our learning and grow as a community of thinkers, helpers, and leaders.
My Project
Launching a new structure in the classroom is a fun and exciting opportunity for a teacher and his or her students. It opens the doors to new ideas, new discoveries, and most of all a chance to reflect on how the new structures are improving instruction in the classroom.
With The Daily 5 and Math Daily 3, two brand new structures for me and my class, we need some things to help us get started.
My focus for The Daily 5 this year was to get our listening center up and running, with lots of choice and variety. The Listening to Reading component of The Daily 5 is crucial for First Graders to help them hear stories. We have requested several book sets that include a CD, multiple copies of books, and a headphone station to accommodate several students at a time. Each book set contains a variety of titles to capture students' interests across genres. Additionally, we have requested a class set of Draw and Write journals that are perfect for first grade, as a way of recording their thoughts about their Listening to Reading experience.
In addition to the Listening Center Items, we are hoping to launch The Math Daily 3, as well. These hands on math tools and manipulatives will support their foundational skills of addition and subtraction- a huge goal in first grade. Building fluency, number sense, and testing out numerous strategies using a variety of tools and manipulatives helps students grow in their critical thinking and problem solving skills.
