I am an educator in a rural area Kentucky school with a high concentration of poverty.
We are located near a military installation and have many military families in our school community. I teach collaboration classes that include special needs and general education students. All my kids want to perform at higher levels!
My Project
I have requested an EarthBox grow kit, garden stand, staking system, small grow lab and monitoring items. In conjunction with previous projects funded through Donors Choose, and with the help of sponsors like UPS, FEED USA and Disney's Planet Challenge, my class wants to begin an organic community garden!
Using these resources, my students will examine life cycles hands-on while planting, growing and harvesting organic soil-based crops. They will also explore and learn environmentally friendly ways to produce crops. This will be the first experience with gardening for many students!
Soil enriched through composting will be used in our outdoor garden. Locally grown and organic produce reduces the transportation carbon footprint and energy use, reduces packaging and is more environmentally friendly. Reduce, recycle, reuse! Composting, energy conservation, environmental responsibility! All are just words until put into practice.
Your help will make it possible for these students to explore ideas and challenges that are simply not available to them in the regular classroom curriculum.
As well as using the garden in math, science, and writing instruction, this project will also help make responsible young citizens. You can make a difference in the lives of the wonderful children I teach and the larger community!
