Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you want to read a good book where do you go? Do you sit upright in a chair at your desk or do you prefer to sit in a soft comfy chair and relax?
My class is part of a school made up of approximately 560 students.
Of these 560 students about 220 of them qualify for free or reduced lunch based on their family income. I have found though that no matter what their background may be one thing is always true, 1st graders love to curl up with a good book in some place other than their desk.
My Project
I would love to give my first graders the opportunity to curl up with a good book, relax and enjoy reading! I am requesting a variety of cushions, chairs and comfy pillows that the students will be able to utilize each and every day during our Daily 5 reading time. Each student will store their own books that are leveled for their reading ability in their book bins. During our Daily 5 reading time the students will take their book tubs to a comfy place in the classroom to read. Also during this time students will be using the hear yourself headphones to work on fluency. As they read to themselves they will be able to hear their rate of reading and self check for understanding. What better way to enjoy a good book than curled up on a comfy pillow or sitting in a relaxing chair?
I can hardly wait to see how the addition of new seating for our reading time will impact the students love of reading!
