Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever had so many great books to read that you couldn't decide which one to start with? Our students are just beginning to discover the joy of reading and their world is only as big as the books they have access to daily.
We teach an enthusiastic group of first graders in a high priority school located in a high poverty community in Northern California.
First grade is an exciting year, but it is also filled with pressure due to the expectation that by the end of the year students will be able to read. For many of our incoming first-graders, learning to read is a real struggle. Many students do not have a rich literary environment at home. We are thrilled by the prospect of watching our students discover the wonder of a really good book, whether it be fact-based or fiction. By increasing our classroom library, we can offer our students the opportunity to choose the books that are most interesting to them. When we see our students engaged in what they are reading, we'll know they're getting the opportunities to practice critical reading skills and strategies.
My Project
We are in need of a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books to give students access to many books at their level. The books we hope to receive help students become successful and enthusiastic readers because they offer a large selection of high interest books at a "just right" reading level for each student. We plan to use these books in three specific learning activities - in guided reading groups, during partner reading and during independent reading time.
Your generous donation will give our students the gift of literacy.
They will develop lifelong skills such as how to choose books that are interesting and engaging. And because the books are at their level, students can read them independently! These books are the tools that will have a significant impact on student learning, not only this year but for years to come.
