Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach in a highly diverse school, where one-third of our population is English language learners. Eighteen countries are represented and fourteen different languages are spoken.

I have a variety of students who speak Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, and French.

They are all very enthusiastic about learning how to read, write, listen and speak in English. Every project funded is a win for our classroom full of diverse learners. I am so excited for my students to receive what they need to thrive!

My Project

I have become truly inspired after reading Donalyn Miller's, The Book Whisperer. With this eye-opening book, I have grown a new sense of appreciation and fascination with finding ways to help my students grow a love of reading that will foster their motivation to pursue independent reading in school and home for years to come.

After reading, I realized that I am missing some much-needed genres within our ESL classroom library: magazines, biographies, and poems.

This project will focus on books suggested from the Book Whisperer along with other books I feel would ignite my students' passion for independent reading. Please help us secure books I know will be a game-changer for students when they return to regular instruction within our school walls.
