I teach first grade in a low income community school. In the first grade there are over 90 students and 5 teachers. The dedication of my fellow grade team teachers is seen in the success of our students experience every day.
Last year, while my students were outside observing the weather one of my boys stumbled across a caterpillar. It instantly caught my entire class's attention and we had to halt our discussion on weather to talk about what exactly this creepy crawly creature was and what it was doing on the pavement outside school. We were lucky enough to fully fund butterfly kits for the whole first grade. Our students LOVED watching their caterpillars turn into butterflies and really learned about the life cycle.
This year we want to do more. We need a refill in our kits for our butterflies. We need more larvae for the students kits so this year's students can learn through the hands on experience and enjoy watching something grow and change. Also, we want to show the students another complete life cycle. By having tadpole kits in the classroom the students will learn hands on how tadpoles turn into frogs.
By funding this proposal you will help all of the first graders develop their critical thinking skills through a hands on science experiment. You will make it possible for my students to explore the life cycle of a butterfly. With your help next time they see a caterpillar my students will be able to explain what exactly it is, what it will become and why.
