Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students come from the most diverse school in the city. They have a variety of ethnic groups, classes, educational backgrounds, and learning styles. We are also honored to have a variety of abilities. We serve students with multiple physical, mental, and emotional impairments. Our students have a chance to learn with a true snapshot of humanity.

My students have the joy to learn.

In the midst of water issues, budget cuts, and buildings closing, my students are determined to learn. There is low morale among students and staff. The impact of these conditions is deeply impacting learning; yet, they are working to overcome these odds and become successful.

My Project

My students are in a food desert. There's only one grocery store within about a 30 minute radius. The one grocery store there is, barely provides any produce. So, students are not exposed and/or eating healthy. This hydroponic grow lab will give them the opportunity to grow fruits and vegetables in class. Then, we can we can sample items to eat. Plus, they will learn to grow their own produce. Once they see how easy it is to have fresh items, they will be more likely to grow food for themselves, in the future too!
