We've been working hard to recruit more kids into FIRST robotics in our area, and we've been able to keep two FIRST Lego League (FLL) Challenge teams going, even through the pandemic! We are the Rutland Robo-Rattlers FLL Team #2451 and the Rutland Robo-Rhinos FLL Team #37564. This year we've been able to start meeting in person at school again, which has been great, and the kids have already done a great job getting their robots on the table tackling missions. We have lots of new kids this year, so we could use some new equipment and supplies.
In this time of exceptional challenge, keeping kids engaged with hands-on learning is key.
We love that FLL allows us to develop all kinds of skills in kids - teamwork, innovation, impact for our community, inclusion, discovery and fun! This year, both teams are trying to solve local businesses solve shipping problems for the Cargo Connect season. We've done some amazing tours of area businesses, and our team mentors from FRC Team 2370 The IBOTS have been working hard to help all our new team members (18 out of 20 are new students) get up to speed.
My Project
FIRST Lego League teams in Vermont increase opportunities for STEM learning for all our students, regardless of their socio-economic status, gender or support at home. We know that STEM education increases the chance of students attending college and their earning potential whether they attend college or join the world of work right from high school or a CTE center. Our FIRST Lego League Challenge students often move up onto our organization's FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team, and so we have a pipeline of STEM learning right through the end of high school.
FIRST robotics teams help our students explore new ideas, practice teamwork and problem solving, learn new skills and become more well-rounded learners.
In the eight years that we've been coaching FIRST Lego League Robotics in the Rutland area, we've seen students grow, bring their friends to learn, go to World Finals and the International Invitational and so much more.
