My students are part of a rapidly changing small community. Our area and district are in the middle of considerable growth and rapid change from a rural community to an urban and suburban community.
As we grow and become more of an urban area with the influx of a more urban population our district is challenged to keep up academically, as well as with our facilities and finances.
Even with a growing urban population our students still show increasing interest in our agricultural science program.
Our agricultural science program helps our more rural population stay in touch with their roots and bridge both interest and knowledge with the increasing urban population. This project donation will provide our agriculture classes the opportunity to get more involved with hands on learning to build skills they can use in their community and possibly in their later careers.
For this project we need a class set of hand shears and a few looping shears. The students will use these tools to cut back last year's growth and get the flower beds ready for this spring. As the plants die back this winter they need to be cut back. The shears and loppers enable the students to do this. The students have been doing this with scissors but this year the plants have gotten too large for scissors. These tools will enable my students to get much more hands on in their learning of plants, landscaping and team work. Projects like this Growing Experience is a great way for all students to get involved and take pride in not only their accomplishments but also their campus. They will learn about plants, life science, working together and get the chance to have a real impact on their campus. Pride goes a long way in the learning of all students.
