Help me give my students another up to date PC necessary to compete in eSports
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My high school, located in a rural and very impoverished area, are continuing to grow our eSports team this year. Currently, there is only one other school in our region (which a much larger school), with a team. Our team had great success last year. One of our players won the Winter Challenge National Championship!!!
Our team is only about to begin its third year, but a large percentage of students are wanting to join, we just need more technology.
As 100% of the student body at my high school receives free or reduced-price lunches, it is not surprising that very few of them have any formal experience in eSports, though almost all the students play. The development of new skills will open up a new depth of knowledge for these students, and, hopefully, many new doors of opportunity to thrive in and out of the classroom will also open.
In an already impoverished district, finding the funds necessary to run a classroom is hard to do. When do you decide to prepare students for a "millennial" life outside of the classroom by implementing new programs that require vast amounts of funding and supplies? Almost impossible.
Our first two years in Esports have been successful, even during a pandemic, but to continue we need to start replacing outdated consoles. The interest in this team has been overwhelming.
Over 25 of our students have committed to joining the team. Studies show that students who are more involved in school are more likely to attend school more regularly, make better grades, attend college and become more productive citizens. Furthermore, more and more jobs are being STEM-related and this team will help us introduce technology to a larger percentage of the students. Now we just need the consoles that will allow us to compete as we continue.
