My Students

Fifth grade science is full of exciting and interesting content. I teach in a departmentalized fifth grade classroom with over one hundred students. I have four classes that are full of curious and inquisitive students. As science learners, my students are always trying to find answers about the world around them. We spend our days exploring, trying to find answers to some of their questions. Students better understand concepts if they can get their hands involved, so I try to expose them to as many hands-on investigations as possible which allows them to see first hand how science works.

My Project

Students will learn about solutions this year. They will discover what saturation is and how to separate solutions. With the materials I have selected, students will discover that by heating a solution it can become more saturated because more solute, Borax, will be able to dissolve . The first step will be to dissolve Borax in hot water. The students will then hang a chenille pipe cleaner that they have made into a shape in the jar and let it sit overnight. The next day they will discover that the solute has separated out of the solution because they will see Borax crystals on the chenille pipe cleaner and in the jar.
