Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is highly diverse with a free and reduced-price lunch rate just under 80%. About half of our students have limited English ability. We also have a high mobility rate of about 40%, which means more then a third of our students move in and out of the school each year. While we have many hurdles to overcome, we use our diversity as a strength and have set the bar high for all our students.
Each year our staff and students work to increase their successes, as evidenced by assessments and personal goals set with each student.
It is our school's goal to prepare all students to have skills needed to move on to college when they graduate from high school; Here at the elementary level we are working to build the foundation skills in Reading, Math, Writing, & Science, but also in organization, communication, problem solving and collaboration so that they can be successful in a world of constant change.
My Project
This project supports a large Plant Life Science Unit supported in collaboration between, the school librarian, our science Teacher, and all our Kindergarten teachers. Students will be learning about, and growing their own vegetables in their classes in hydroponic Areogrden planters. As they move through this 10 week unit, they will also be reading stories each week from the librarian related to the lessons they are taught in the classroom.
Specific books in this project have been chosen to support the student's learning each week as they participate in hands-on project-based learning activities.
At the end of the unit, they will have discussed many topics: parts of a seed, germination, The five needs of every plant, pollination, seed dispersal, and healthy eating. Each wee these stories help provide the schema and ideas that will build their knowledge of plants, and by the end, Kindergartners will be able to proudly celebrate their success and leaning by having a salad party where they can eat what they have grown in their classes.
