Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students face several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. My students are joyous, clever, and very spontaneous. They like to move, they love to read, they enjoy expressing themselves, and they love lots of positive attention. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on making sure my students feel loved, cared for and valuable. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire my learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
This year my school site is starting the Reader's Workshop model, which I am excited about!! This curriculum allows students plenty of independent practice with reading and decreases teacher talk time so students lead their learning.
The curriculum necessitates that each student has around 10 books weekly at their reading level and of high interest to them so they can practice, practice, practice and grow, grow, grow their reading muscles!
Unfortunately, our school site does not have adequate funding to ensure all students have enough books so I have created this project. Not only are there books represented at multiple levels within this project, but there is also an awesome read-aloud resource!! All of this will increase students' love for reading and their academic levels! There are also fun math resources that will make fractions more concrete! Lastly, a nice wiggle break resource!
