Our students are spirited, fun-loving, out of the box thinkers. They are strong willed and courageous. They also defy social norms; ignore classroom expectations, and struggle with typical behavior. This group of secondary students are placed at our building because they displayed a behavior that directly contradicts the student code of conduct. In light of this, our students are often nervous, anxious, scared, mad, happy, or excited about their life experiences.
It is our job to ensure students feel safe and secure when in our classroom.
When our students walk through the door, we meet them with unconditional love and support. Many of our students do not have a healthy home environment and are looking for stability in other areas of their lives. Sometimes this desire for a connection leads them to others that are negative influences. Our job is to provide an atmosphere of calm to meet their needs.
My Project
It is my sincere hope that I will have the opportunity to attend a professional development conference in the area of School Counseling. This conference will allow me to gain new strategies and techniques for supporting students and staff on my campus. I am confident that the knowledge I will gain from this conference will help me to become an even more effective School Counselor. The knowledge I will attain from this experience will benefit my students for years to come.
My students' will be directly impacted by my attendance at this conference!
Many of the students at my school are sheltered and not exposed to various life experiences. We have a wide range of students from very low socioeconomic status to middle class to upper class. Our school offers many programs to encourage development, but often times, these programs do not meet the needs of some students. This conference will allow me to add to my toolbox of strategies for helping students develop their social/emotional skills.
