My students need must have instruction across all academic areas. Art is a subject that gets often gets left out. Having water color crayons and oil pastels will give my students access to multiple art mediums.
I teach at a Title I school, and 76% of students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our first graders also require assistance for school uniforms, jackets, and backpacks. They have limited experiences and opportunities in the world. In spite of this, they are eager, inquisitive, and excited about learning.
My students are special and important.
Classroom environment and the materials in it are key to creating a place for optimum learning.
First graders are young children that are asked to work hard and continuously throughout the day. They are wiggly, fidgety, high energy kids that need to move around regularly during the day. The challenge of keeping them focused and working is always a challenge.
Schools have crayons, colored pencils, and limited paint to teach art with. This limits what can be taught to my students! My students need to be exposed to and use some of the wonderful art materials that exist. Water color crayons and oil pastels are two mediums that will allow my students to experiment with colors, the blending of colors, and how they can be used. Art must be taught in schools so that the world will have wonderful artist in the future.
Art allows students to be creative, expressive, and shine.
Some students excel in art more than the other academic areas. Art gives recognition to these students. Perseverance, creativeness, and attention to details are also skills that must be used in art. Students will make mistakes, but in art, they learn to accept them. Understanding that not everything you do will be perfect and amazing is a valuable life skill.
