This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Play is the highest form of research"- Albert Einstein
Done are the days where students sit and complete worksheet after worksheet. In our class, students will be invited to dig deeper and to build their mathematical understandings through questioning, discussions and most importantly, through play.
Our students are first graders in an inclusion classroom in Brooklyn, NY.
Our school houses the ASD Nest program and is a community of diverse learners. Our school has adopted the philosophy of the ASD Nest program, which believes that educators are responsible for figuring out the way each student learns and for prompting their strengths. We believe that students learn best when learning from each other through class discussions and group work. Our students enjoy the use of hands-on activities and love taking on the role of a teacher and teaching others. Our students also love sharing their ideas, working with partners and playing math games.
My Project
The requested materials will increase student engagement in math lessons. For example, the lapboards, number lines and Ten-Frames magnetic answer boards will allow students to show their work during a lesson rather than just saying the answer. The wet-erase markers will be used to write on the lapboards. Young mathematicians learn best through hands-on experiences and the use of manipulatives. Students will understand and practice math facts through math games using the double-sided counters, Unifix cubes, dot art painters, timers and math counters. Students will become familiar with shape attributes through the use of attribute blocks and jumbo magnetic design shapes. The privacy boards help students keep their minds on their work during independent work-time. The take-home backpacks will be used to implement a new home-to-school connection called “Math Packs,” in which students will be able to take home math games so that they can continue working on their math skills at home.
Young students learn by talking about ideas and through play.
We will create investigations to deepen students' understanding of math ideas with the donations. Showing their math thinking on a lapboard or with manipulatives helps young mathematicians talk through their ideas. The materials will help us transform students’ feelings about math from “I don’t like math” to “I can’t wait for math time!” We want to foster a community of students who not only love math but understand math concepts.
