My Students

Our school is a Title I school, which means ninety percent or more students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My students are from low income households where most have non-English speaking parents.

Sadly, many of my students have failed third grade already, and began this school year with minimal resources.

Despite the hardships they endure, my students are eager to come to school to learn every day.

They enjoy participating, working collaboratively and motivating each other to work hard; however, they are very limited in their access to technology. Together, with a little push and help, I am confident our class will succeed and surpass expectations! None of us is as strong as all of us!

My Project

Collaborations and brainstorming are essential tools for STEM projects. Being from a school with children of low income, it is difficult to acquire materials for STEM activities. The crystal kit will engage my students, allowing them to collaborate and brainstorm as they learn about physical science and engineering concepts. With the help of the crystal kit, my students will be challenged to grow crystals and compete to create the best design. The plant life cycle is also an important concept in science. Because the majority of my students live in apartment buildings, they don’t have the opportunity to grow a garden or even see the life cycle of a plant. Few of my students know the joy and excitement of watching a seedling sprout into a plant. A garden is a great STEM activity to learn about what plants need. It will also allow them to use mathematical skills as they measure and graph their findings. I wanted to incorporate slime as well, since most of the students are so fascinated. STEM activities will teach them the reasoning behind things they enjoy, such as slime.

The crystal and garden will allow my students to gain experience in science, math, and technology first hand.

Students will use the class camera to document the growth and changes of the crystals and the garden. All these activities will also lend them self to a mathematical lesson in data collection and creating graphs.
