This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a fantastic caseload of special education students at my elementary schools. I often work on basic development/fine motor skills through handwriting. In my special education preschool classrooms I incorporate art projects into fine motor work and play such as dress up, blocks, pegs and pretend kitchen play. These activities help children grow and develop the skills they need for pre-writing work. In the second and third grade classrooms, I work on teaching the students to place letters on the line, form letters correctly (start your letters at the top, not bottom) and sit correctly in their seats. I recently helped a handful of students that had no pencils. I gave them each a new pencil and we marked them with tape so they know which one is their own.
My Project
I am asking for a variety of resources including a soft, safe balance beam, soft tree seats, counting cones, art supplies including crayons, and stress reducing items including pencil toppers. I can not wait to try the tree trunk stools with my students in the OT room.
Different seating materials are being tried everywhere and I would like to try it with my students at our table when working on visual motor activities such as cutting and printing.
I also like the new pencil toppers that have a flavor and students can chew them. I currently have a fifth grade student that chews on straws in the classroom and I would like to try these pencil toppers with him. I have an old box of crayons that the kids rarely want to use. A new box of colors and crayons will be a hit with them when coloring their work.
