I have a group of fantastic 4th graders who come from from varied economic and ethnic backgrounds. They come to school excited every day to learn, and I enjoy seeing their eager faces each morning!
Students this age are just beginning to understand more deeply the world around them, and our garden project helps them understand first-hand the magnificence of nature!
In 4th grade we spend a lot of time on significant indoor academic endeavors. We do much more math, research, reading, and writing than in early elementary years. But the kids are still young, and still need time outdoors. My classroom garden gives them an opportunity to stretch their legs, get some fresh air, and learn and contribute to the beauty of our school! Hands-on activities are so effective at cementing new concepts in children's minds, and help kids become well-rounded adults ready to make positive contributions to the world.
My Project
Our garden provides much-needed outdoor time for my students, while they also learn first-hand about so many valuable topics. They learn about farming methods, environmental sustainability, nature, ecosystems, life science and cycles and much more. They see the beauty in the plants, and the butterflies that love our garden as much as we do!
These garden supplies will enable my students to expand and beautify our garden, and to work together to add more varieties of plants and vegetables!
They will learn about climate and different requirements of different species, as we see what grows best in our sunny spot. They will learn problem solving, as we deal with sun, rain, shade, and weekends!
The benches and birdbath will provide both beauty and functionality, as children and birds will have a place to sit together! The soil and mulch will let us expand the garden so more kids can work at the same time, and the new plants will add exciting new dimensions! Kid-sized equipment will make sure the kids do the work, safely and effectively! Thank you so much for taking the time to read and learn about our garden initiative! We are so excited to see our garden evolve!
