The culture of our school is tightly woven with cultural and ethnic diversity, and it is a beautiful place to be! The children have a desire to learn no matter--or, perhaps, because of--the circumstances from which they come.
Many students at my school have recently emigrated from other countries, some with only the clothes on their back.
Diversity is defined as the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization. "Diverse" is the word that best describes my school.
Our students come from over 30 different nations, and many of them have little or nothing when they arrive at our doors. Our families have a very high rate of poverty, with over 75% living below the poverty line. We also have some of the highest taxed real estate in the city in our neighborhood, and, yes, the children who live in those houses also attend our school. Our motto is "From across the street and around the world," which truly describes us.
My Project
"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed no hope at all."- Dale Carnegie
Growth mindset is essential in students' success both in school and in life.
Teaching growth mindset to students increases their persistence in difficult tasks, creates a comfortable learning environment, and cultivates a community of learners. Unfortunately, many students struggle with failure, and instead have a fixed mindset. These students may give up after one mistake or when problems seem challenging.
Reading a book to the class is a great way to start a discussion. I chose titles like I Can't Do That Yet and Almost to start the discussion with the students that there are a lot of things that they can't to yet, but with practice and hard work they will be able to. This new library of books and posters will help students go from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.
